27-Year-Old Louisiana Man Indicted On Federal Firearms Charges, Faces up to 15 Years and a $250k Fine if Convicted

New Orleans, Louisiana – A 27-year-old Louisiana man has been indicted on federal firearms charges and now faces up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted.

On March 24, 2023, United States Attorney Duane A. Evans announced that Terrance Pickett, age 27, a resident of Zachary, Louisiana, was charged on March 24, 2023, in a one-count indictment for violating the Federal Gun Control Act.

Pickett is charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 922(g)(1).

Pickett faces up to 15 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, three years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment fee.

U.S. Attorney Evans reiterated that the indictment is merely a charge and that the guilt of the defendant must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that brings together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to prevent violent crime and gun violence and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone. On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a violent crime reduction strategy to strengthen PSN based on the following core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results.

The crime was investigated by the New Orleans Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. The prosecution is led by Assistant United States Attorney Mark A. Miller of the Violent Crime Unit.
