Sulphur, Louisiana - The city of Sulphur has announced several temporary road closures to prepare for and host the 2025 Christmas Under the Oaks Festival, scheduled for Friday, Dec. 5, and Saturday, Dec. 6.

City officials stated that the closures are necessary for event setup, vendor areas, pedestrian safety, and post-event takedown around the festival site. Drivers who regularly travel through the affected streets are urged to plan alternate routes and allow extra time.

Road Closures Begin Thursday, Dec. 4

Beginning at 12 p.m. (noon) on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2025, the following streets will be closed:

  • Ruth Street, from Cypress Street to Pecan Street – local traffic only
  • Cypress Street, from Ruth Street to Huntington Street

These closures are intended to allow early setup for festival infrastructure, such as tents, staging, lighting, and vendor access, while still maintaining some limited local access for residents and businesses on Ruth Street.

Additional Closures All Day Friday, Dec. 5, and Saturday, Dec. 6

For the main festival days on Friday and Saturday, another roadway will be closed:

  • Pecan Street, from South Ruth Street to Pamela Street

This closure will be in effect all day on both Friday and Saturday as festival traffic, foot traffic, and parking demands increase around the event area.

Duration Of Road Closures

All listed road closures will remain in place through Sunday, Dec. 7, 2025.

Motorists can expect normal traffic patterns to resume after festival equipment is removed and the area is cleared. The city did not provide a specific hour on Sunday for reopening, so drivers should assume closures will remain in effect until city crews complete their work.

Traffic Impact And Safety

The City of Sulphur is encouraging drivers to:

  • Use alternate north-south routes instead of South Ruth Street where possible
  • Avoid Cypress Street between Ruth and Huntington unless accessing nearby property
  • Plan ahead for delays near Pecan Street between South Ruth and Pamela on Dec. 5–6
  • Watch for increased pedestrian traffic around the festival area

These types of closures are commonly used during large community events to separate vehicles and pedestrians, which can reduce the risk of traffic incidents and help emergency services access the area if needed.
