Official national results may take some time in this election due to condensed polling places in many states and an increased number of mail-in ballots.
No state ever reports its final results on election night.
Some news outlets may declare winners the night of the election using partial counts and exit polls, but those are not official.
States have until December 8, 2020, to officially complete counting votes for this election.
December 8, 2020, is currently the “safe harbor” deadline for states to choose electors that they can ensure will be accepted by Congress.
The electoral college will meet to cast ballots on December 14, 2020.
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (Republican of Florida) has proposed pushing back the safe harbor date, but that has not yet been passed.
