Lake Charle, Louisiana - A domestic dispute in Lake Charles escalated to a deputy-involved shooting on Sunday evening, resulting in the hospitalization of a Sulphur man.

On March 23, at approximately 8:00 p.m., Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call at a residence on Barn Stable Drive in Lake Charles. Before deputies arrived, they received information that the suspect, Matthew E. Calloway, 40, of Sulphur, Louisiana had allegedly placed a firearm to the victim's head and pulled the trigger, though no one was shot during that initial confrontation.

Upon arrival, deputies discovered that the victim and her two young children had managed to escape the residence. Law enforcement personnel observed Calloway pacing inside the home and issued verbal commands for him to exit and approach them walking backward, a standard procedure intended to maintain officer safety during suspect apprehension.

During this process, Calloway reportedly turned suddenly toward the deputies and drew a firearm. Deputies responded by discharging their weapons, striking Calloway. Following the shooting, deputies took Calloway into custody and transported him to a local hospital, where he is currently being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Sheriff Stitch Guillory has requested the Louisiana State Police to conduct an independent investigation of the deputy-involved shooting, while the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the domestic incident. Charges against Calloway are pending.

The victim was transported to a hospital for evaluation, and the two young children were released to family members. No deputies were injured during the incident.

Authorities have indicated that the investigation remains active and ongoing.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
