Lake Charles, Louisiana – On Friday, February 21, 2023, Joshua Boyd, a 42-year-old resident of Lake Charles, Louisiana was found guilty of molestation and sexual battery of a victim under the age of thirteen. The verdict came after an investigation and subsequent arrest by the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit detectives in 2021.
Boyd’s conviction marked a significant moment in the legal proceedings surrounding child sexual abuse cases in the area. However, the case took an unexpected turn during the jury deliberation phase. An incident involving Captain Todd Ory of the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, who was serving as courtroom security, prompted a hearing. Details of the incident have not been disclosed, but it raised concerns about the integrity of the trial process.
As a result of this incident, the presiding judge made the decision to declare a new trial. This ruling underscores the importance of maintaining a fair and unbiased judicial process, especially in cases involving sensitive matters such as sexual crimes against minors.
Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Stitch Guillory released the following statement regarding the incident:
“I strongly disagree with the actions of Captain Ory,” stated Sheriff Stitch Guillory. “He has been placed on leave and we have launched an internal investigation to determine if any policies were violated. I want to be clear that I stand behind the investigation conducted by our CPSO SVU detectives, where physical evidence was collected and presented. I also feel strongly about the unanimous guilty verdict that was handed down by the jury and the hard work the Calcasieu Parish District Attorney’s Office put into prosecuting this case. I know this situation has caused additional distress to the victim and their family, and I regret that they are having to go through this. This is an ongoing internal investigation and we are limited in what we can say and the details we can release at this time, but I want to ensure the community we, as a department, remain committed to upholding high standards of accountability and transparency.”
