A powerful hurricane is bearing down on the southern Windward Islands, prompting the National Hurricane Center (NHC) to issue advisories on Hurricane Beryl. Meanwhile, the remnants of Chris have dissipated over eastern Mexico.
As of the latest update on July 1, 2024, Hurricane Beryl is located approximately 125 miles northwest of Grenada, with maximum sustained winds of 150 miles per hour (mph) and a minimum central pressure of 944 millibars (mb). The storm is moving in a west-northwest direction at 21 mph, bringing tropical storm conditions, dangerous waves, and heavy rainfall to the southern Windward Islands.
The NHC warns that Beryl’s powerful winds and heavy rainfall pose a significant threat to the region.
Note: At the time this article was written on July 1, 2024, Beryl posed no immediate threat to Southwest Louisiana.
In addition to Beryl, the NHC is monitoring an area of low pressure located over 1,000 miles east-southeast of the Windward Islands. Environmental conditions are marginally conducive for development, and a tropical depression could form by mid-week as it moves westward across the central and western tropical Atlantic.
Interests in the Lesser Antilles are advised to closely monitor the progress of this system, which has a 20% chance of formation within the next 48 hours and a 50% chance of formation within the next seven days.
As the Atlantic hurricane season heats up, it’s essential for residents in hurricane-prone areas to stay informed and prepared.
