High-Speed Chase Through Calcasieu Parish on November 9, 2020

Published November 11, 2020

On November 9, 2020, shortly after 9:45 pm, a “be on the lookout” (BOLO) was issued for a  2017 black Mazda MX6 heading eastbound on I-10 possibly being driven by a juvenile runaway. Shortly after the BOLO was issued, a Louisiana State Trooper from Troop D spotted the suspect vehicle near mile marker 17 and began pursuit. The chase remained on I-10 through Southwest Louisiana and continued out of Lake Charles where other agencies joined the chase. Officers in the chase reported speeds as low as 55 Mph and up to around 110 Mph over the radio as it continued east on I-10 out of Lake Charles.  Spike strips or similar devices were deployed twice by officers. On the first attempt, the driver was able to avoid the spike strips. A second attempt was made to deploy spike strips near Jennings in Jeff Davis Parish and was successful. Shortly after the vehicle ran over the spike strips an officer began smelling burning rubber. The fleeing vehicle took exit 64 off of I-10 east and headed south on LA 26 in Jennings, Louisiana. After heading south on LA 26 the fleeing vehicle reportedly lost the front right tire. The vehicle then exited LA 26 and circled around a convenience store and fast-food restaurant. The chase finally ended in the parking lot of the American Legion Hospital in Jennings.

The police chase lasted approximately 45 minutes.
