Mosquito Season Arrives Early in Calcasieu Parish, Prompting Control Measures

Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana – Residents of Calcasieu Parish are facing an early onset of mosquito season this year, as reported by Mosquito Control officials with the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury. The increase in salt marsh mosquito populations has been a cause for concern, attributed to last summer’s drought that led to the drying out of marshland habitats. Scott Harrington, Operations Manager at Mosquito Control, noted that the lack of beneficial organisms, such as minnows, which naturally keep mosquito larvae populations in check, has contributed to the current outbreak.

The phenomenon is exacerbated by recent weather conditions, including high winds, fog, rain, and cooler temperatures, which have been hindering control efforts. Mosquito Control has been utilizing spray trucks and airplanes to combat the mosquito problem, but the unpredictable weather has been causing interruptions in their operations.

In light of the situation, residents are advised to take preventive measures by using repellents when outdoors and eliminating any standing water sources in their yards. Mosquitoes are known to lay their eggs in water, making it crucial to remove potential breeding grounds to reduce the mosquito population.

With the cooperation of the community and continued efforts from Mosquito Control, it is hoped that the impact of the early mosquito season can be mitigated to ensure the well-being and comfort of residents in Calcasieu Parish.
