Charges Upgraded for Louisiana Man Suspected of Shooting Family Member in Lake Charles on February 26

Lake Charles, Louisiana – On March 6, 2023, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office (CPSO) confirmed that charges had been upgraded from attempted 2nd-degree murder to 2nd-degree murder for a suspect arrested in connection with a February 26 shooting in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies were summoned to a residence on Highway 3059 in Lake Charles at approximately 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 26 in relation to a shooting. Deputies arrived to find the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. The victim was sent to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Authorities discovered that the suspected shooter was Ruben Acosta-Camacho, 45, of Lake Charles. He was apprehended and sent to CPSO for questioning, where he reportedly admitted to detectives that he shot the victim. He was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center and charged with attempted 2nd-degree murder.

On Saturday, March 4, CPSO investigators learned that the victim, Arturo Acosta, 36, a family relation of Acosta-Camacho, died as a result of the injuries acquired in the shooting. The charges against  Acosta-Camacho were raised from attempted 2nd-degree murder to 2nd-degree murder, as well as illegal use of a weapon during a crime of violence. His bond was set at $690,000 by Judge Tony Fazzio.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. A person is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
