LAKE CHARLES, La. — A crash on Interstate 10 eastbound near mile marker 34 in Lake Charles closed lanes and disrupted traffic Monday evening, according to the Lake Charles Police Department.
UPDATE: This crash has been cleared from the roadway.
The incident was reported at approximately 5:40 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 12. At the time of the report, the roadway in the affected area was closed, and drivers were using the frontage and surface roads as a detour. Authorities advised motorists to use caution and avoid the area if possible.
The crash occurred on I-10 eastbound at mile marker 34, a key stretch of highway that serves daily commuters, commercial traffic, and travelers passing through the Lake Charles area. Even a single blocked lane on this corridor can quickly lead to backups, especially during the evening rush period when traffic volumes are higher.
No additional details were immediately available regarding the number of vehicles involved, possible injuries, or how long the closure was expected to last. Officials did not provide an estimated time for reopening the affected lane or fully clearing the interstate.
Frontage roads, which run parallel to the interstate and provide local access to businesses and neighborhoods, were used to keep vehicles moving around the closure. While that helps relieve some congestion, drivers in the area are still experiencing delays as traffic was funneled off the main travel lanes and onto smaller roadways.
Lake Charles Police urged drivers to exercise patience, reduce speed near the scene, and follow all posted detour signs. Motorists were also encouraged to seek alternate routes, particularly those who did not need to travel through that specific section of I-10 eastbound.
