Calcasieu Parish School Board Closes Schools May 7 Due to Severe Weather and Flooding Risk

Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana - Calcasieu Parish School Board (CPSB) officials announced that all CPSB schools and facilities will be closed on Tuesday, May 7, in response to forecasts predicting heavy rainfall and a heightened risk of localized flooding. The decision follows a series of weather briefings and consultations with local meteorologists throughout the day, as the region braces for potentially hazardous conditions overnight and into the morning hours.

CPSB emphasized that the safety of students, faculty, and staff remains its top priority.

Meteorologists have warned that the area may experience several inches of rain in a short period, which increases the risk of flash flooding, when floodwaters rise rapidly, often with little warning. Flash floods can be particularly dangerous for morning commuters and school bus routes, as they may encounter impassable roads or sudden water accumulation.

The National Weather Service classifies flash flooding as a life-threatening hazard due to its swift onset and potential to disrupt transportation and infrastructure. Local emergency management officials have encouraged residents to monitor weather alerts and avoid driving on flooded roadways, as even a small amount of moving water can sweep away vehicles.

CPSB plans to resume normal operations on Thursday, May 8, pending improved weather conditions. The district urges parents and guardians to stay tuned to official communications for any further updates.

For now, educators and families alike are reminded to prioritize safety and adhere to local advisories. While no one enjoys a rainy day disrupting normal routines, taking proactive steps keeps the community secure in the face of unpredictable weather.
