Lake Charles, Louisiana — McNeese State University suspended all operations at 3:45 p.m. on May 6 and is planning a delayed start of operations on Wednesday, May 7, due to anticipated heavy rainfall and high winds forecasted for the next 24 hours. The decision affects all campus activities, with evening events expected to be rescheduled, according to university officials.

The move comes as meteorologists predict significant rainfall and gusty winds that could create hazardous conditions on and around campus. University administrators are working to ensure the safety of students, faculty, and staff by limiting exposure to severe weather. The National Weather Service has indicated that storms may result in localized flooding and difficult travel conditions.

All campus events scheduled for the evening of May 6 will be postponed, with organizers expected to announce new dates once conditions improve. University officials emphasized the importance of monitoring official communication channels for further updates.

In anticipation of lingering weather impacts, McNeese State University is planning a delayed start to operations on Wednesday, May 7, if conditions permit. An official announcement regarding the reopening of the campus will be made by 9 a.m. on Wednesday, or earlier if circumstances change. Students and employees are encouraged to check their email, the university website, and official social media accounts for the latest information.

For those who must remain on or near campus, university police remain on duty to address emergencies. Individuals needing immediate assistance are instructed to contact McNeese Police at 337-475-5711.

Campus officials urge everyone to take precautions during severe weather events. This includes staying indoors, avoiding low-lying areas prone to flooding, and refraining from unnecessary travel until conditions improve. In the event of power outages or infrastructure damage, the university’s emergency management team is prepared to coordinate response efforts.

While the current closure disrupts normal operations, university leaders stress that the safety of the McNeese community is the top priority.
