Lake Charles, Louisiana – The homecoming football game between McNeese and Northwestern State has been called off due to the cancellation of the NSU football program for the rest of the season. This decision follows the tragic passing of Ronnie Caldwell, a member of the NSU team.
Other homecoming events such as the parade on October 26 and the Friday Night Cowboy Block Party featuring LA Roxx will proceed as planned. The remaining homecoming activities will be put on hold until November 11 when McNeese hosts HCU for their final home game.
McNeese will be awarded a win for this canceled game.
The following statements were released by Heath Schroyer, McNeese Director of Athletics and McNeese President Dr. Daryl Burckel via MSU News.
Heath Schroyer, McNeese Director of Athletics: “It’s unfortunate that we announce the cancellation of our upcoming homecoming football game against Northwestern State this Saturday. This decision was made by Northwestern State’s leadership, who recently decided to cancel its season due to the tragic passing of their teammate, Ronnie Caldwell. We want to express our deepest condolences to Ronnie’s family and the entire Northwestern State community during this difficult time. We know this news will bring disappointment to our team and our fans, however, we support NSU’s decision. Our thoughts and prayers are with NSU as it navigates this heartbreaking situation.”
McNeese President Dr. Daryl Burckel: “We support (Northwestern State) President Jones’ decision. I know this wasn’t an easy one but it’s one that’s in the best interest of the Demon football program. Our hearts go out to them.”
