Claiborne Parish, Louisiana - Louisiana State Police Troop G is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred on Louisiana Highway 9 near Forest Grove Road on Thursday afternoon, claiming the life of a Homer man.

Paul Hammon Jr., 66, died at the scene following the head-on collision between two commercial trucks around 12:35 p.m., according to authorities.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2007 Peterbilt 379 was traveling southbound on Louisiana Highway 9 when a 1999 Mack truck, driven by Hammon, was traveling northbound in the southbound lane. The two vehicles collided, causing the Mack truck to overturn.

Hammon was properly restrained at the time of the crash but sustained fatal injuries. Emergency responders pronounced him deceased at the scene. The driver of the Peterbilt, who was also properly restrained, suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Louisiana State Police investigators do not suspect impairment played a role in the crash. However, standard toxicology samples were collected from both drivers and submitted for analysis, following protocol in fatal traffic incidents.

The investigation into why Hammon's vehicle was traveling in the wrong lane remains ongoing. Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances that led to the Mack truck crossing into the southbound lane.

Both drivers were wearing seatbelts during the crash, which officials note is a critical safety measure in commercial vehicle operations. Despite proper restraint use, the force of the head-on collision proved fatal for Hammon.

Louisiana Highway 9 serves as a major transportation corridor in the region, frequently used by commercial trucks and local traffic.
