With 8.5 million reported cases and 223,000 deaths reportedly caused by COVID-19 in the United States as of October 2020, medical professionals have said that a vaccine is one of the best tools to help fight the virus. There are currently more than ten pharmaceutical companies working on a COVID-19 vaccine in the US, but as of late October 2020, none have been approved for distribution to the general public. Some predict that a COVID-19 vaccine will be available for the most vulnerable in the population by the end of 2020, and for the general public by Spring 2020 though it could take longer.
Added November 9, 2020:
Pfizer and their collaborator, BioNTech, announced positive efficacy results from their Phase 3, late-stage study of a potential COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine candidate was found to be more than 90% effective in preventing COVID-19 in participants without evidence of prior SARS-CoV-2 infection in the first interim efficacy analysis. Pfizer estimates that a median of two months of safety data following the second and final dose of the vaccine candidate – required by FDA’s guidance for potential Emergency Use Authorization – will be available by the third week of November.
Added November 23, 2020:
Oxford University and AstraZeneca pharmaceutical company has now also tested a COVID-19 vaccine that has been found to be up to 90% effective.
The question is, how many people will get a COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available?
Take our poll below to let us know if you will get a COVID-19 vaccination when it becomes available.
