Westlake, Louisiana - The City of Westlake issued a citywide boil water advisory effective immediately following a water main leak, requiring all residents and businesses to take precautionary measures before consuming tap water.

City crews are currently working to repair the damaged water main. Officials have not provided a timeline for when the advisory will be lifted, stating updates will be shared as the situation develops.

The advisory affects all water consumption activities, including drinking, cooking, and food preparation. Residents must bring water to a rolling boil for at least one full minute before using it for drinking, cooking, or brushing teeth.

Tap water used for washing fruits and vegetables must also be boiled first. The city advises against making ice with unboiled tap water. Bottled water serves as a safe alternative during the advisory period.

While tap water remains unsafe for consumption, residents may continue using it for bathing and showering. However, city officials warn against swallowing the water during these activities.

The boil advisory will remain in place until water samples collected by city officials confirm the water is safe for consumption. A boil water advisory is a precautionary public health measure typically implemented when water systems experience potential contamination from infrastructure failures, pressure drops, or other events that could allow bacteria or other harmful organisms to enter the water supply.

Water main leaks can compromise water quality by reducing pressure in the distribution system, which may allow contaminants to enter through cracks or joints in the pipes. Boiling water kills most disease-causing organisms, including bacteria, viruses, and parasites, making it safe for consumption.

Residents seeking additional information or updates on the boil advisory should contact the City of Westlake.
