Sulphur, Louisiana – Motorists traveling on West Houston River Road near Sulphur should prepare for delays as a section of the roadway will be reduced to one lane for two days this week.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development announced that a portion of West Houston River Road between Maurine Drive and Long Leaf Drive will operate with a single lane on Thursday, Nov. 13, and Friday, Nov. 14. Crews will be conducting roadway repairs during this period.
Officials said no detours will be established for the construction work. Instead, traffic in both directions will alternate through the single open lane as repairs are completed. This traffic pattern, known as alternating one-way traffic, allows vehicles to pass through the work zone in a controlled manner.
Drivers using this route should anticipate longer travel times and exercise caution when approaching and traveling through the work zone. Transportation officials recommend allowing extra time for trips that include this section of roadway.
The repair work is subject to weather conditions and could be rescheduled if inclement weather occurs. Louisiana’s coastal climate can bring unpredictable rain and storms, particularly during the fall months, which may impact construction schedules.
West Houston River Road serves as a connector route in the Sulphur area, providing access for residents and commuters between neighborhoods and main thoroughfares. The stretch between Maurine Drive and Long Leaf Drive carries both local and through traffic daily.
Transportation officials did not specify the nature of the roadway repairs or provide details about what infrastructure issues necessitated the work. Roadway repairs can include patching potholes, resurfacing damaged pavement, fixing drainage problems, or addressing structural concerns.
The two-day timeline suggests the repairs are relatively minor compared to major reconstruction projects, which typically require weeks or months to complete. However, even short-term lane closures can create backups during peak travel times.
Motorists are encouraged to stay alert for flaggers, construction workers, work vehicles, and changing traffic patterns in the area. Work zones present hazards for both road crews and drivers, making reduced speeds and heightened awareness essential for safety.
