Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana - As frigid temperatures approach the region, the Sulphur Christian Community Coalition (SC3) in Sulphur and Water's Edge Gathering in Lake Charles are set to open warming centers to provide refuge for those in need. The centers will operate on Wednesday and Thursday nights, ensuring that unsheltered individuals have a safe place to stay during the cold snap.
These community organizations have gathered supplies, thanks to the generosity of local residents and coalition partners. However, additional items are still needed to enhance the experience for those seeking shelter. Specifically, the organizers are requesting individually packaged snacks, chips, and drinks, as well as laundry detergent, dish soap, and toilet paper, which are items that are quickly consumed and always in demand.
Water's Edge Gathering will begin its shelter service on Wednesday at 11:00 AM and will continue to operate until Friday at noon. In addition to providing a warm space, the center will offer a shower and laundry truck, courtesy of Catholic Charities of Southwest Louisiana. Meals will be provided for breakfast and lunch over the three-day period, but organizers are still seeking support for Thursday night's supper, with an estimated 125 individuals expected.
Among the specific food items still needed at Water's Edge are garlic bread and salad dressing for Wednesday night, loaves of bread for Friday's lunch, as well as large canisters of Kool-Aid mix, paper bowls, hot sauce, water, t-shirt bags (plastic shopping bags), and latex gloves. The community's contributions have played a crucial role in ensuring that these centers are equipped to support those in need during this challenging time.
