VINTON, La. — A home on Foster Brothers Road in Vinton was destroyed Saturday morning after a large structure fire prompted a multi-agency response from fire departments across Calcasieu Parish.
Ward Six Fire Protection District No. One was dispatched at 9:02 a.m. on Jan. 31 as automatic aid to Ward 5 Fire District for a reported structure fire, according to information released by Ward 6 officials.
When Ward 6 Command Unit 901 arrived on scene, firefighters reported heavy fire and smoke showing from the structure. Due to the extent of the fire on arrival, crews began defensive fire suppression operations, meaning firefighters worked from the exterior of the building because it was already too dangerous to safely fight the flames from inside.
The home was declared a total loss. The occupants were able to evacuate the structure before firefighters arrived, and no injuries were reported in the information provided.
Multiple Calcasieu Parish Agencies Assist
The response involved several fire departments from across Calcasieu Parish and nearby communities:
- Ward 5 Fire District – Primary jurisdiction for the area and initial responding agency.
- Ward 6 Fire Protection District No. One – Dispatched as automatic aid and assumed command with Unit 901.
- Ward 7 Fire Protection District – Also responded on automatic aid and established a water supply for firefighting operations, a critical role in rural or semi-rural areas where hydrants may be limited.
- Sulphur Fire Department – Called to the scene to provide additional manpower and equipment.
- Vinton Fire Department – Also requested by command to assist with staffing and apparatus.
- Houston River Fire Department – Provided a rehab unit and stood by for other calls in the Ward 6 district.
A rehab unit is a specialized support resource on fire scenes where firefighters can rest, cool down or warm up, rehydrate, and be medically monitored after working in high-heat and high-stress conditions. Houston River Fire Department’s rehab support allowed crews to rotate safely while maintaining fireground operations and ensuring that other calls in the area could still be covered.
Firefighting Operations And Response Strategy
Upon arrival to find heavy fire and smoke conditions, incident command placed priority on containing the blaze and protecting firefighters and any nearby properties. The heavy involvement of the structure led to the use of defensive tactics, which often include:
- Exterior hose lines and nozzles
- Possible use of deck guns or larger-caliber streams, depending on the apparatus available
- Establishing and maintaining a reliable water supply
Ward 7 Fire’s role in establishing water supply likely involved setting up water shuttles or securing access to hydrants or static water sources, depending on local infrastructure along Foster Brothers Road.
While specific details about the construction of the home, the origin of the fire, or property damage estimates were not provided, the agencies involved reported that the structure was a total loss. No information was released regarding the cause of the fire, and no investigative findings were included in the available report.
Regional Cooperation In Calcasieu Parish
The incident highlights the cooperative nature of emergency response in Calcasieu Parish, where automatic aid agreements allow multiple departments to be dispatched simultaneously for structure fires. These agreements help ensure that, even in more rural areas like sections of Vinton, enough personnel, engines, tankers, and support units arrive quickly to mount an effective response.
