Vehicle Crimes Investigators in Louisiana Arrest Sulphur Man For Alleged Theft of Multiple Vehicles and Other Crimes

Sulphur, Louisiana – Investigators in Louisiana have arrested a man from Sulphur for allegedly stealing multiple vehicles.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office (CPSO) stated on June 19, 2023, that on June 2, VCIU detectives responded to a business on Beglis Parkway in Sulphur, Louisiana, in regard to an automobile burglary.

CPSO indicated that Detectives determined during their initial investigation that an unknown suspect burglarized the victim’s truck while it was parked at the business. The suspect grabbed the victim’s wallet, which had two credit cards, and used them at a Sulphur grocery store. Investigators obtained security footage from the store and turned it over to the CPSO Real Time Crime Center (RTCC). The suspect was identified by RTCC deputies as James W. Carey, Jr., 32, of Sulphur, Louisiana.

Detectives with VCIU obtained a warrant signed by Judge Tony Fazzio. Deputies searched for Carey but were unsuccessful.
On June 6, CPSO deputies were summoned to a local tow business in Sulphur in response to a truck theft from the business. CPSO VCIU detectives analyzed video surveillance and watched Carey enter the gated parking area during the initial inquiry. Carey entered two vehicles before eventually entering a truck and driving away by smashing the fence.

Carey arrived at the business in an SUV that had previously been stolen from a nearby car dealership in Sulphur, according to additional inquiry. Deputies discovered the stolen truck and executed a traffic stop later that day, June 6, with the aid of the CPSO RTCC, at which time deputies made contact with the driver, Carey. Carey was also found in possession of what appeared to be synthetic marijuana.
When VCIU detectives spoke with Carey, he reportedly admitted to stealing the vehicle and SUV. He also reportedly admitted to detectives that he was responsible for the June 2 burglary and theft.

Carey was arrested and put into the Calcasieu Correctional Center for simple burglary, theft under $1,000, and identity theft. He was also charged with theft of a motor vehicle valued at $25,000 or more, theft of a motor vehicle valued at $5,000 to $25,000, criminal simple damage to property valued at $1,000 or less, possession of synthetic marijuana, two counts of simple burglary, and two charges of criminal trespass. His total bond was set at $61,000 by Judge Tony Fazzio and Kendrick Guidry.

DiQuan Bennett, James Jones, and James Rathke of the CPSO VCIU are the principal investigators in these cases.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
