Unrestrained Louisiana Woman Succumbs to Injuries Sustained in Crash on US 80

Louisiana – On May 11, 2022, Louisiana State Police reported that on May 10, 2022, shortly after 9:00 a.m., Troopers assigned to LSP Troop G began investigating a two-vehicle fatality crash on US Highway 80, near Oakhaven Drive. Dorothy Hughart, 78, was unrestrained and died in this crash.

The initial investigation revealed that Yesenia Martinez, 40, of Haughton, was driving a 2014 GMC Acadia east on US Hwy 80. Hughart was driving a 2001 Chevrolet S-10 west on US Highway 80 at the same time. Martinez failed to yield the right of way as she attempted to make a left turn onto Oakhaven Drive and collided with the Chevrolet. The Chevrolet overturned and came to a stop in the westbound lanes of US Highway 80 as a result of the impact. Martinez came to an abrupt halt on Oakhaven Drive. Hughart, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport with potentially fatal injuries.

Hughart succumbed to her injuries in the crash and was pronounced dead at the hospital on May 11, 2022, according to Troop G.

Martinez, who was restrained, was not hurt in the accident.

Although impairment is not suspected to be a factor in this crash, routine toxicology samples were collected and sent for analysis. The crash is still being investigated.

While not all crashes are survivable, statistics show that properly wearing your seat belt will dramatically reduce your chance of being injured or killed in a crash. Louisiana law requires that every person in a vehicle, regardless of seating position, always remain buckled up. Properly wearing your seat belt is one of the most effective ways to save your life and reduce injuries in crashes.

In 2022, Troop G has investigated 11 fatal crashes, resulting in 12 deaths.
