Unrestrained Louisiana Man Killed in Single-Vehicle Crash After His Vehicle Collided with a Concrete Traffic Barrier and Caught on Fire

New Orleans, Louisiana – On September 10, 2022, the Louisiana State Police reported that shortly before 1:30 am, Troopers with LSP Troop B responded to a single-vehicle crash on US 90B east, just east of General De Gaulle Drive. The crash ultimately claimed the life of 38-year-old Charles Garrett of New Orleans, Louisiana.

In the initial investigation, authorities found that Garrett was in a 2010 Cadillac CTS driving east on US 90B approaching the Crescent City Connection bridge. Garrett failed to negotiate a curve and traveled off the roadway to the right before the Cadillac collided with a concrete traffic barrier. After the initial impact, the Cadillac traveled across all lanes of US 90B east and continued beyond the left shoulder before impacting a second concrete traffic barrier, for reasons that are still under investigation. The Cadillac then became engulfed in flames after coming to rest near the middle of the roadway.

Garrett, who was unrestrained at the time of the incident, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. Garrett’s impairment is unknown, and routine toxicology results are anticipated.

Troopers want to remind drivers of the importance of making safe decisions behind the wheel. While not all accidents are avoidable, wearing a seatbelt significantly reduces the chances of being killed or seriously injured in an accident. Having a plan and making safe decisions could be the difference for tomorrow.
