Lafayette, Louisiana – A 36-year-old Abbeville, Louisiana resident, Schuyler Lewis, died late on July 29, 2025, in a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 724 (South Fieldspan Road) near Paul Molbert Road in Lafayette Parish. Louisiana State Police Troop I responded to the scene just before 11 p.m., where they found Lewis deceased.

According to the preliminary investigation, Lewis was traveling south in a 2023 Kia Sportage when, for reasons still under investigation, his vehicle veered off the right side of the roadway while navigating a curve. The vehicle struck an embankment, then collided with a tree and a utility pole. Authorities confirmed Lewis was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the incident and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.

Routine toxicology samples were collected from Lewis to determine if impairment factored into the crash. The results of these analyses have not yet been released, and the investigation remains open as law enforcement officials continue to gather evidence.

Authorities have emphasized the importance of seat belt use, noting that occupants who are unrestrained are at a significantly higher risk for serious injury or death in crashes. Law enforcement urges drivers and passengers to always use seat belts, obey all traffic regulations, and remain attentive and unimpaired while behind the wheel.
