Arabi, Louisiana - A 64-year-old Metairie man died Saturday after a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 39 in St. Bernard Parish, according to Louisiana State Police.

Troopers with Louisiana State Police Troop B responded around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025, to a report of a crash on LA 39 at Schnell Drive. The incident involved a 2025 Hyundai Palisade and no other vehicles.

What Investigators Say Happened

Based on the preliminary investigation, State Police said Scott Sanders of Metairie was driving a 2025 Hyundai Palisade north on LA 39 near Schnell Drive when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway.

After leaving the travel lane, the Hyundai struck a reinforced steel billboard support pillar. The impact caused severe damage to the vehicle and serious injuries to the driver.

Troopers reported that Sanders was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

Injuries And Medical Response

Sanders suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported to a local hospital. Despite medical treatment, he later died from those injuries.

No additional injuries were reported, and no other vehicles were involved in the incident, according to the initial State Police report.

Impairment And Ongoing Investigation

Louisiana State Police said impairment is not suspected at this time. However, as is standard procedure in fatal crashes, routine toxicology tests are pending.

Troopers have not yet released additional details about what may have caused the vehicle to leave the roadway.
