Unrestrained Louisiana 18-Wheeler Driver Dies in Single Vehicle Rollover Crash on I-49
Louisiana – On September 16, 2022, Louisiana State Police reported that Troopers from LSP Troop I were notified of a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 49 near milepost 30 in St. Landry Parish soon after 10:15 a.m. Harvey Broussard, 60, of New Iberia, Louisiana, was killed in the crash.
The incident occurred when Broussard was driving a 2022 Kenworth 18-wheeler north on I-49, according to the initial investigation by State Police. The 18-wheeler tractor-trailer veered off the road to the right and down an embankment for unknown reasons. As a result, the 18-wheeler rolled numerous times, ejecting Broussard from the vehicle.
Broussard was unrestrained at the time of the crash, according to troopers. The St. Landry Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced him dead at the scene. A toxicological sample was acquired for analysis, and the crash is still being investigated.
Louisiana State Troopers would like to remind motorists that, while not all incidents are survivable, statistics suggest that when properly restrained, the odds of surviving a crash increase dramatically. Making wise decisions while driving, such as never driving while intoxicated and always ensuring all occupants are properly restrained, can often mean the difference between life and death.
So far in 2022, Troop I has investigated 35 fatal crashes that resulted in 40 deaths.
