St. Landry Parish, Louisiana – At around 6:30 p.m. on November 25, 2023, Louisiana State Police Troop I received a report of a single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 360, about five miles north of Louisiana Highway 10.

The crash resulted in the tragic loss of 17-year-old Hunter Joseph Higdon from Port Barre, Louisiana. According to the initial findings by State Police, the crash occurred when Higdon was driving an eastbound 2006 Chevrolet Pickup on LA 360. The vehicle veered off the road for reasons that are currently being investigated and ended up in a ditch on the north side of the road. After leaving the road, the Chevrolet collided with an embankment and overturned, causing Higdon to be thrown from the vehicle.

Higdon was not wearing a seatbelt at the time. He was taken to a local hospital where medical staff later confirmed his passing.

The involvement of alcohol or drugs is not yet determined, and samples have been collected for testing. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.

Louisiana State Troopers urge all drivers to consistently make responsible choices when operating vehicles. Wearing seat belts is one of the easiest and most effective ways to safeguard oneself from harm or death in case of an accident. It’s important to always fasten your seat belt before driving and ensure that all passengers do likewise.

So far in 2023, Troop I has investigated 47 fatal accidents resulting in 52 deaths.
