East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana – An unrestrained driver has died after running off of LA 409 and colliding with a culvert.
Louisiana State Police Troop A launched an investigation into a severe single-car crash occurring on Louisiana Highway 409 near Lavell Road. The incident, which took place shortly after 4:00 p.m. on July 16, 2023, resulted in the tragic death of the 44-year-old Pride, Louisiana resident, Jason Cotten.
The initial findings of the investigation indicate that Cotten was driving a 2006 Nissan Titan north on LA Hwy 409. For reasons still under investigation, the Nissan exited the roadway to the right while in a curve. Cotten tried to recover control over the Nissan by steering left; however, his overcorrection led the truck to swerve off the road on the left, hit a culvert, and flip over.
Cotten was not wearing any restraints during the accident and sustained severe injuries. He was taken to a close-by hospital where he eventually passed away.
A routine toxicology test was conducted on Cotten and the results are being analyzed. The investigation into this crash is still ongoing.
