DeQuincy, Louisiana - A DeQuincy man died Saturday after his pickup truck rolled over on Big Woods Starks Road in Calcasieu Parish, according to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office.
Louis Pool, 48, of DeQuincy, Louisiana, was traveling southbound on Big Woods Starks Road on October 26 when his vehicle veered off the right side of the roadway for unknown reasons, deputies said. Pool overcorrected, causing the pickup truck to roll and exit the roadway to the left.
Pool was partially ejected from the vehicle during the rollover and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators determined he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident. Deputies have not released information about what may have caused Pool to initially leave the roadway.
Big Woods Starks Road connects rural areas of Calcasieu Parish. Single-vehicle crashes often occur when drivers overcorrect after drifting off the roadway, a maneuver that can cause vehicles to roll, especially at higher speeds.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that seatbelt use reduces the risk of death by 45 percent for front-seat passengers in vehicles. Ejection from a vehicle significantly increases the likelihood of fatal injuries in crashes.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
