Two Unrestrained Louisiana Men Killed and Three Other Injured in Early Morning Crash on US 167
Vermilion Parish, Louisiana – Two people were killed and three more injured in a vehicle crash in Louisiana on 5 January, according to state police.
Louisiana State Police reported that on January 5, 2023, shortly before 1:30 a.m., LSP Troop I was notified of a two-vehicle crash on US Highway 167 near Lawrence Road in Vermilion Parish. Jasper Morrison Foster, 36, of Maurice, Louisiana, and Matthew Wayne Landry, 22, of Lafayette, Louisiana, died in the crash.
The initial investigation by State Police found Foster was driving a 2019 Ford F250 south on US 167 at a high rate of speed. The F250 rear-ended a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe going south on US 167 for unknown reasons. Following the collision, both vehicles exited the road and overturned. Landry was a passenger in the F250.
Foster and his passenger, Landry, were both unrestrained and ejected from the vehicle. The Vermilion Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced both deceased on the scene. The Tahoe’s three occupants were also unrestrained. All three were sent to a nearby hospital with significant injuries.
Standard toxicological samples were collected from both drivers for analysis. This accident is still being investigated.
Louisiana State Police would like to encourage motorists to slow down, buckle up, and put down their phones. Make a New Year’s resolution to drive more safely this year. Crash forces don’t care who you are or what you drive. The faster you drive, the greater the chance of serious injury or death, and not wearing a seat belt dramatically enhances that risk. This crash illustrates the difference between walking away and being carried away from a crash. Let us all vow to make the roads safer in 2023.
So far in 2023, Troop I has investigated two tragic crashes that killed three people.
