Louisiana – A somber Sunday morning in Louisiana’s Madison and Jackson Parishes was marred by two devastating crashes, claiming the lives of three individuals. Louisiana State Police Troop F responded to the incidents.
The first crash occurred on U.S. Hwy 80, east of LA Hwy 601-2, in Madison Parish, around 6:00 a.m. A 2015 Nissan Altima, driven by 20-year-old Kayden Acuff of Tallulah, Louisiana veered off the right side of the road before overcorrecting and striking a tree on the eastbound shoulder. Both Acuff, who was unrestrained, and 21-year-old front-seat passenger Jamicha Lovings-Smith of Vicksburg, Mississippi, succumbed to fatal injuries at the scene.
Louisiana State Police indicated that impairment is suspected to be a contributing factor, and routine toxicology samples were collected for analysis.
Later that day, around 12:00 p.m., a second crash occurred on LA Hwy 146, east of LA Hwy 145, in Jackson Parish. A 2007 Honda Pilot, driven by 54-year-old Sherman Dotson of Ruston, Louisiana ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree. Dotson, who was unrestrained, was ejected from the vehicle and sustained severe injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. Although impairment is not suspected in this incident, routine toxicology samples were collected for analysis.
These tragic events serve as a reminder of the consequences of impaired driving and the importance of wearing seatbelts. According to the Louisiana State Police, nearly half of the fatal crashes in the state are caused by impaired drivers. The organization emphasizes the importance of having a plan for a safe ride home before consuming any alcohol or drugs, as even slight impairment can significantly impact driving abilities. Additionally, taking the simple step of buckling up can greatly increase the chances of surviving a crash.
The investigations into both incidents are ongoing, and the Louisiana State Police Troop F is working to determine the exact causes of the crashes.
