Beauregard Parish, Louisiana - Louisiana State Police Troop D launched an investigation into a tragic incident that occurred on the evening of July 12, 2024, just after 5 pm, claiming the lives of two individuals in Beauregard Parish. The victims were identified as 59-year-old Ellory "Butch" Burgess Jr. from Longville, Louisiana, and 29-year-old Cody Goode from Dry Creek, Louisiana.

According to preliminary findings, Burgess was driving a 2000 Peterbilt dump truck heading south on U.S. 171 near Willow Branch Road when the vehicle veered off the road for reasons still being looked into. The dump truck then overturned onto its right side, traversed through a ditch, and collided with multiple trees in a wooded area.

Tragically, neither Burgess nor Goode were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash and were ejected from the vehicle, resulting in fatal injuries. They were pronounced deceased at the scene. Another passenger, a juvenile who was also unrestrained, was partially ejected and sustained moderate injuries. The child was swiftly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Standard toxicology samples were gathered for analysis as part of the ongoing investigation into the crash. The authorities highlighted the importance of adhering to Louisiana's seat belt laws, emphasizing that wearing seat belts significantly reduces the risk of injury or death in road incidents.

In 2024, Troop D has already handled 8 fatal crashes, resulting in a total of 9 fatalities.
