Two Good Samaritans Rescue Family in Louisiana After Vehicle Runs Off Roadway and Becomes Submerged

Assumption Parish, Louisiana - Louisiana State Police reported on December 7, 2022, that following the first press release, LSP Troop C learned of a second Good Samaritan who stopped to assist Mr. Lapeyrouse in saving a family from drowning when their vehicle entered a canal and became submerged.

The identity of the second person was first unknown. Troopers were subsequently able to identify Chase Dupre of Chauvin, Louisiana as the second individual who stopped with Mr. Lapeyrouse after seeing the incident. Mr. Dupre and Mr. Lapeyrouse both entered the water and were able to open the Toyota door. Both of these men were able to work together to save the four-person family.

Earlier, Louisiana State Police said that on December 7, 2022, soon after 8:00 a.m., Troopers from LSP Troop C responded to a single-car crash involving a submerged vehicle on LA Highway 182 near LA Highway 662 in Assumption Parish. A man who witnessed the incident rescued the four occupants of the vehicle, two of whom were young children, to safety.

A 2007 Toyota Corolla was heading east on LA Hwy 182 when it went off the road to the right, into a canal, and immediately became immersed in the water, according to an investigation. The occupants of the Toyota were unable to open the doors and evacuate the vehicle due to the deep mud and marsh.

When Jeff Lapeyrouse of Bourg saw the incident, he pulled over and hurried to aid. Mr. Lapeyrouse entered the water, successfully opened one of the Toyota's doors, and safely rescued all four occupants. The crash resulted in only minor injuries.

Louisiana State Police Troop C is grateful to both of these individuals for entering a perilous situation to assist save several lives.
