Two From Louisiana Arrested for DWI on the Water Over the Memorial Day Extended Weekend

Louisiana – The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reported on May 31, 2022, that enforcement agents arrested two men on May 28 and May 30 in Iberia and Pointe Coupee parishes for allegedly operating or driving a vessel while impaired (DWI).

John Benoit Jr., 42, of Addis, Louisiana, was arrested on May 28 for DWI on the water in Grand River, Iberia Parish. Agents also arrested Zackary Guillory, 24, of Port Allen, Louisiana, on May 30 for DWI on the water in Pointe Coupee Parish’s False River. Guillory was also cited for failing to comply with personal flotation device (PFD) laws.

Agents on patrol in Grand River observed Benoit operating a vessel and stopped him for a boating safety inspection. Agents observed signs of impairment and arrested him for DWI. He was booked into the Iberia Parish Jail.

Agents on patrol in False River observed Guillory operating a vessel and stopped him for a boating safety inspection. Agents observed signs of impairment and arrested him for DWI. Agents also discovered that Guillory did not have a PFD for everyone on board the vessel. He was booked into the Pointe Coupee Parish Jail.

The penalties for DWI on the water are the same as those for driving a car. Anyone arrested for DWI on the water or on the road will lose his or her driver’s license and boating privileges for the duration of the case, as ordered by the judge.

DWI carries a fine of $300 to $1,000 and up to six months in jail. Failure to comply with PFD requirements can result in a $100 fine.

Lt. David Boudreaux, Sgt. Channing Duvall, and Corporal Luke Langley are the agents involved in the cases.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. A person is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
