Thibodaux, Louisiana – Louisiana State Police Troop C initiated an investigation into a fatal single-vehicle crash on Louisiana Highway 1 near Welcome Road near Thibodaux, Louisiana, on the evening of December 28, 2023. The crash resulted in the tragic loss of 16-year-old Ashton Newkirk from Thibodaux.
Initial findings indicate that a 2008 Chevrolet Impala, driven by another 16-year-old, was traveling at high speed while negotiating a left curve on LA Hwy 1. The vehicle veered off the road to the right and collided head-on with a culvert for reasons that are still being examined.
Both the driver and Newkirk were wearing seatbelts, but unfortunately, the rear passenger, a 14-year-old, was not properly restrained. Newkirk succumbed to injuries at the scene, while the other two occupants sustained life-threatening injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital outside the area.
Toxicology results for the driver are pending as part of the ongoing investigation.
Louisiana State Police said that the incident underscores how speeding reduces reaction time, increases stopping distance, raises the risk of losing control, and diminishes seatbelt effectiveness during crashes. These risks are particularly heightened for young drivers who are still honing their skills behind the wheel. Emphasizing adherence to speed limits and promoting responsible driving practices among young individuals is crucial for safeguarding their safety as well as that of all road users.
