Tragic Multi-Vehicle Crash on Louisiana’s US Hwy 171 Claims Life of Elderly Lake Charles Resident

Lake Charles, Louisiana - Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a multi-vehicle crash on US Hwy 171 (Calcasieu River Bridge) in Calcasieu Parish on November 13, 2023, just before 6:00 p.m. Sadly, the crash resulted in the death of Janette G. Spooner, a 90-year-old resident of Lake Charles, Louisiana who was a passenger in one of the vehicles involved.

The initial investigation revealed that Spooner sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Several drivers were cited for following too closely, and the incident is currently under investigation.

So far in 2023, LSP Troop D has investigated a total of 31 fatal crashes that led to 34 deaths.

Louisiana State Police said that while not all crashes can be prevented, it's important to minimize distractions, obey traffic laws, and avoid driving while impaired to reduce the risk of such incidents. When driving on busy roads, it's crucial to maintain a safe speed, keep a safe distance from other vehicles, and always look ahead for at least five seconds whenever possible.
