Terrytown, Louisiana – A devastating multi-vehicle crash occurred on Sunday, July 28, 2024, on LA 428 near Northbrook Drive in Terrytown, Louisiana resulting in the tragic loss of life of 36-year-old Frank Mayfield of Gretna, Louisiana. According to Louisiana State Police Troop B, the crash involved a motorcycle and a pickup truck.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Mayfield was operating a 2009 Kawasaki Ninja Motorcycle at a high rate of speed northbound on LA 428, approaching the intersection of Northbrook Drive. At the same time, a 2006 Toyota Tundra pickup truck exited a private driveway onto LA 428, waiting to turn left onto the highway. The motorcycle collided with the driver’s side of the Toyota, resulting in fatal injuries to Mayfield, who was wearing a Department of Transportation (DOT)-approved helmet.

Mayfield succumbed to his injuries at the scene, and standard toxicology samples were collected for analysis. The driver of the Toyota escaped without injury and showed no signs of impairment. A breath sample was voluntarily provided, which showed no alcohol detected. The investigation is ongoing.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible behavior on the road. Speeding, in particular, can have devastating consequences, as it decreases reaction time, increases stopping distance, and heightens the risk of losing control of a vehicle. Additionally, it reduces the effectiveness of safety devices such as helmets and seatbelts in the event of a crash.

The Louisiana State Police encourage motorists to prioritize safety on the roadways, following speed limits, wearing safety gear, and never operating a vehicle while impaired. If you witness hazardous situations or possible impaired drivers, you can dial LSP (577) to report the activity to the nearest Troop.

Furthermore, the Department of Public Safety offers motorcycle operator training courses, ranging from beginner to advanced levels, to promote safe riding practices. These courses can be a valuable resource for motorcycle enthusiasts, and more information can be found at https://lsp.org/services/training/motorcycle-safety/.
