St. Bernard, Louisiana – On Friday, March 14, 2025, at approximately 10:20 p.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop B responded to a serious crash involving a bicycle on LA 300 (Bayou Road) near the intersection with LA 39 in St. Bernard Parish. The incident resulted in the tragic death of 13-year-old Joshua Bordelon, a resident of St. Bernard, Louisiana, and left another juvenile rider injured.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Bordelon and a fellow juvenile were riding their bicycle in the middle of the westbound lane when a 2014 GMC Yukon SUV, traveling west on LA 300, struck the bicycle. The circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation, and authorities have not yet determined the specific reasons for the collision.
At the time of the incident, the roadway was poorly lit, and both riders were dressed in dark clothing, which likely contributed to the lack of visibility. Additionally, the bicycle did not have any lights or reflective gear, further diminishing its presence on the road. Bordelon sustained severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The second juvenile rider experienced moderate injuries and was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
The driver of the GMC was reported to have been unrestrained at the time of the crash but did not suffer any injuries. A routine toxicology sample was collected from the driver, as is standard procedure in such incidents. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing, and officials are working to gather more information regarding the events leading up to the collision.
Troopers are emphasizing the importance of road safety for both motorists and bicyclists. Louisiana law classifies bicycles as vehicles, which means that cyclists are required to adhere to the same traffic laws as motor vehicle operators.
