Catahoula Parish, Louisiana – A devastating two-vehicle crash on US Highway 84 west of Louisiana Highway 913 has resulted in the loss of two lives, including a 5-year-old juvenile passenger and 58-year-old Fredrick Washington of Jonesville, Louisiana. The incident occurred on June 21, 2024, at approximately 11:13 p.m., according to Louisiana State Police Troop E.
Preliminary investigations suggest that a 2018 Kia Soul, driven by 25-year-old Viktoria Jones of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, crossed the centerlines into the eastbound travel lane, colliding head-on with a 2011 Nissan Maxima driven by Washington. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, but authorities are urging motorists to stay alert and avoid distracted driving, a leading cause of crashes in the state.
The crash resulted in multiple injuries and fatalities. Jones, who was not wearing a seatbelt, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Two juvenile passengers in the Kia, who were restrained, also sustained moderate injuries and were hospitalized. However, a third juvenile passenger in the Kia, who was restrained with a lap belt only, tragically succumbed to fatal injuries at the scene.
Washington, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on scene. Three juvenile passengers and one adult passenger in the Nissan, who were not restrained, sustained serious injuries and were hospitalized. Routine toxicology samples were obtained and submitted for analysis.
This tragic incident highlights the importance of proper seatbelt use and the dangers of distracted driving. According to Louisiana State Police, proper use of seatbelts can greatly decrease an occupant’s chance of death and may greatly reduce the extent of injury. Ensuring every occupant is properly restrained can often mean the difference between life and death.
In 2024, Troop E Troopers have investigated 30 fatal crashes, resulting in 33 fatalities. The Louisiana State Police urge all motorists to stay vigilant and take responsibility for their actions behind the wheel, as a lapse in awareness can have deadly consequences.
