Toomey, Louisiana - The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has announced the immediate closure of the Toomey Rest Area on Interstate 10 Eastbound at Mile Marker 1 in Calcasieu Parish. The shutdown began Wednesday, July 23, 2025, and DOTD stated it will continue until further notice. The closure comes as a result of unspecified water issues affecting the facility. DOTD did not elaborate on the nature or cause of the water problem.
The Toomey Rest Area, situated near the Texas state line, serves as a key stop for eastbound travelers entering Louisiana. According to facility information, the rest area offers amenities such as free wireless internet, vending machines, restroom facilities, 61 parking spots for cars, and six spaces designated for trucks, along with 12-hour security presence. Its proximity to the state line makes it a frequent stop for motorists, long-haul truckers, and tourists.
DOTD has not reported any timeline for resolution or reopening, but did indicate that they will provide updates when the facility can safely reopen.
There are several rest areas along Interstate 10 for travelers seeking alternative stops. However, those passing through Calcasieu Parish near Vinton may need to adjust their travel plans and prepare to utilize other facilities further along the route.
DOTD encourages drivers to plan ahead, especially during periods of excessive heat, heavy travel, or for those needing restroom breaks or other services. Rest area closures, although inconvenient, are sometimes necessary to ensure the safety and hygiene of the traveling public.
