Three Louisiana Men Cited for Flounder Violations by LDWF
Louisiana – The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries stated on October 21, 2022, that on October 19, enforcement officials cited three males for alleged fishing infractions in Plaquemines Parish.
Arielle Vicknair, 24, of St. Bernard, Louisiana, Richard Vasquez, 59, of Port Sulphur, Louisiana, and Michael Champlin, 52, of Buras, Louisiana, were cited with catching flounder during a closed season, according to agents.
Agents were on patrol in Plaquemines Parish’s Oak River area when they came upon three separate watercraft. During marine safety and licensing compliance inspections, authorities reportedly discovered Vicknair with 18 flounders, Vasquez with three flounders, and Champlin with four flounders.
The recreational and commercial harvest of southern flounder is prohibited from October 15 to November 30 of each year. This statewide closure applies to all sectors and gear types, including any flounder caught as bycatch in another fishery. Exemptions for southern flounder caught as bycatch on a shrimping trip that formerly existed are no longer relevant.
Taking flounder during a closed season is punishable by a $350 fine. Vicknair faces $289 in civil reparation, Vasquez faces $48, and Champlin faces $64 in civil restitution for the illegally obtained fish.
Lt. Adam Young and Corporal Blaine Wagner are the agents involved in the case.
A person is innocent until proven guilty.
