Louisiana – United States Attorney Brandon B. Brown announced that Juan Francisco Salas, 45, of Houston, Texas, has been sentenced by Chief United States District Judge S. Maurice Hicks, Jr. on drug trafficking charges.

Salas was sentenced to 76 months in prison (6 years and 4 months), followed by three years of supervised release, for possessing methamphetamine with the intent to distribute it. A Louisiana State Police trooper performed a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by Salas on December 5, 2019. The trooper inspected Salas’ vehicle after a period of questioning and discovered roughly ten kilograms of methamphetamine inside a box in the back cargo area. Salas said that he was aware of the illegal substances in the trunk. The recovered methamphetamine was analyzed by the US Drug Enforcement Administration’s Laboratory, which revealed that the total amount seized was 9,205 grams.

This case was investigated by the DEA and Louisiana State Police and was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Leon H. Whitten.
