SULPHUR, La. — The final phase of the Maplewood Drive Rehabilitation Project in Sulphur is now underway, marking a major step toward completing one of the city’s key roadway improvement efforts.
Phase 3, which will begin on November 24, focuses on rehabilitating the section of Maplewood Drive between East Diane Drive and City Service Highway. According to project details, this phase is expected to last about 12 months, during which motorists should expect lane closures and periodic traffic delays.
City officials have said that the work is part of a long-term plan to restore and improve the heavily traveled corridor, rather than a short-term patch or temporary fix. Rehabilitation typically involves repairing or replacing damaged roadway surfaces, addressing underlying base issues, and making related improvements to extend the life of the road and improve safety.
Lane Closures And Traffic Impacts
Throughout the next 12 months, drivers using Maplewood Drive should anticipate lane closures in the construction zone between East Diane Drive and City Service Highway. Specific closure schedules were not released yet.
During the project, motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time, consider alternate routes when possible, and watch for construction crews and traffic control signs. The lane closures are necessary to give crews enough room to safely operate heavy equipment and perform the rehabilitation work.
How The Project Has Progressed
The Maplewood Drive Rehabilitation Project has been completed in three main phases, each focusing on a different segment of the roadway:
- Phase 1 – Rehabilitation of the bridge between Shasta Street and West Diane Drive.
- Phase 2 – Roadway rehabilitation from West Diane Drive to East Diane Drive, and the segment from Quince Street to the previously mentioned bridge.
- Phase 3 – Roadway rehabilitation from East Diane Drive to City Service Highway, now in progress.
The first two phases have already been completed, improving both the bridge structure and key stretches of pavement that serve neighborhood traffic and connect to larger thoroughfares. With Phase 3 launched, the entire corridor from Quince Street across the bridge and through to City Service Highway is on track to be rehabilitated.
What “Rehabilitation” Means For Drivers
Roadway rehabilitation includes:
- Removing and replacing damaged pavement
- Strengthening the road base where needed
- Smoothing uneven surfaces to improve ride quality
- Updating drainage structures to help manage stormwater more effectively
For drivers, this work is intended to reduce potholes and rough spots, provide a smoother driving experience, and extend the life of the roadway so large-scale repairs are needed less often in the future.
Long-Term Benefits For Sulphur
Maplewood Drive is an important route for residents, school traffic, and local businesses in Sulphur. By phasing the work over time, the city has been able to address structural issues, improve safety, and modernize the corridor in segments rather than shutting it down all at once.
Although drivers will face lane closures and construction delays over the next 12 months, the project is designed to deliver long-term benefits:
- Improved driving conditions and ride quality
- Better support for daily commuter and commercial traffic
- A stronger, more durable roadway that should require fewer major repairs
As Phase 3 progresses, motorists in Sulphur can expect continued updates about traffic patterns and construction activity as the city works toward finishing the Maplewood Drive Rehabilitation Project.
