Sulphur, Louisiana - The City of Sulphur has secured significant state funding for water infrastructure improvements, receiving nearly $2 million in reimbursements through Louisiana's Water Sector Program while awaiting additional funds for ongoing projects.
In 2022, Sulphur became eligible to receive up to $4,999,999 in reimbursements for water sector improvements. The funding opportunity came through recommendations from the Water Sector Commission and approval by the Joint Legislative Committee on the Budget. The grant program covers approximately 55% of construction costs for qualifying water system improvements.
The city recently completed its North Water Plant project in June 2024 at a total cost of $3,847,370. The project focused on upgrading filter tanks, improving internal components and replacing filtration media. Following completion, Sulphur requested $1,991,982.97 in reimbursement through the water sector grant program.
The city received these funds in two separate disbursements. The first payment arrived in August 2024, followed by the second installment in March 2025.
Sulphur continues work on the Verdine Water Plant Phase 3 project, which represents the final phase of a multi-stage water infrastructure initiative. The construction project meets the grant program's reimbursement guidelines and carries an estimated total cost of $5.5 million.
City officials expect to receive approximately $3 million in reimbursements for the Verdine project once completed. However, the city currently awaits $508,109.40 in reimbursement for work already finished on this phase.
The Water Sector Program serves as a state initiative to support municipal water infrastructure improvements across Louisiana. The program requires local governments to fund projects upfront, then provides reimbursements for qualifying expenses after completion.
Sulphur officials indicated they will continue providing updates on the status of pending reimbursement funds as the Verdine Water Plant project progresses toward completion.
The infrastructure improvements represent part of broader efforts to modernize water treatment facilities and ensure reliable service for residents. Both completed and ongoing projects focus on upgrading aging equipment and improving water filtration capabilities.
