Sulphur, Louisiana - The Sulphur Police Department is actively investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred near mile marker 22.5 on Interstate 10 during the early morning hours of July 30, 2025, resulting in the death of 52-year-old McKinley Lazard of Opelousas, Louisiana.

Officers responded at approximately 6:50 a.m. after receiving a report of a body discovered on the north side of the interstate. Upon arrival, they found Lazard, a black male, deceased at the scene. Preliminary findings indicate that Lazard had been walking along I-10 sometime between the night of July 29 and the early morning of July 30 when he was struck by an unknown vehicle. The driver involved did not remain at the scene.
Authorities have not yet identified the vehicle or the driver responsible for the crash. The Sulphur Police Department is urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward. Capt. Cheaney is leading the investigation and can be reached at 337-527-4550.
