Sulphur Police Pursuit On I-10 Ends In Lake Charles Crash; Driver Faces Multiple Charges

Sulphur, Louisiana — A high-speed pursuit that began in Sulphur ended in a crash on Interstate 10 in Lake Charles Monday evening, leaving minor injuries and leading to multiple criminal charges for the driver, according to the Sulphur Police Department.

Police say the incident started on January 12, 2026, at approximately 5:17 p.m., when a Sulphur police officer observed a Nissan Altima traveling eastbound on I-10 at a speed of 92 miles per hour. The officer attempted a traffic stop for the speeding violation, but the Altima did not pull over and continued eastbound on the interstate.

The pursuit continued into Lake Charles along I-10. Near mile marker 33, investigators say the Altima struck a disabled vehicle that was stopped on the shoulder of the roadway.

Following the crash, officers were able to apprehend the driver of the Altima, identified as 18-year-old Karrington Mitchell of Brandon, Mississippi. Sulphur police report that Mitchell was taken into custody at the scene.

According to the Sulphur Police Department, Mitchell has been charged with:

  • Aggravated flight from an officer
  • Possession of marijuana
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

Mitchell was booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center on those charges.

Officials said minor injuries were reported as a result of the crash. No fatalities were reported. Authorities did not provide additional information about medical treatment or the exact number of people injured.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
