Sulphur, Louisiana – K9 Beno, a valued member of the Sulphur Police Department’s canine unit, will soon receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. This specialized, potentially lifesaving equipment is designed to protect Beno during law enforcement duties and is expected to be delivered within ten weeks.
Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 2009, is dedicated to providing protective vests and support to law enforcement dogs across the United States. The organization supplies U.S.-made, custom-fitted, National Institute of Justice-certified vests to K9 officers, ensuring both bullet and stab resistance during police work. Each vest comes with a five-year warranty, weighs between four and five pounds, and is valued at $1,800. They offer critical protection while maintaining comfort and agility for the K9s.
K9 Beno’s new vest was sponsored by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. and will honor the memory of K9 Rex of Louisiana Christian University with the inscription, “In memory of K9 Rex, Louisiana Christian University - EOW 12-13-22.” Such donations serve as both a tribute and a practical measure to enhance police canine safety.
Since its founding, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,225 protective vests to K9s in all 50 states—a combined value of approximately $6.9 million—through private and corporate donations. In addition to vests, the nonprofit has distributed opioid reversal kits like NARCAN, first aid supplies, and medical insurance for K9s, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to K9 officer welfare.
Eligibility for the vest program includes U.S. law enforcement dogs that are at least 20 months old, actively employed, and certified. K9s with expired vests may also qualify. With an estimated 30,000 law enforcement canines serving nationwide, the demand for such resources remains substantial.
A single vest sponsorship costs $1,050, less than the actual value thanks to partnerships and bulk purchasing. Donations of any amount are welcome, and all contributions are tax-deductible.
