Sulphur, Louisiana - Sulphur High School’s main campus and 9th Grade Campus were evacuated Tuesday afternoon, December 3, 2024, after a bomb threat was reported to the Sulphur Police Department, according to information released by the Calcasieu Parish School Board.

Authorities emphasized that all students, faculty, and staff were safe during the incident, and that law enforcement took control of the response.

This is an update to a story published earlier. Read the original story here.

Threat Reported, Campuses Evacuated

At approximately 1:40 p.m., the Calcasieu Parish School Board announced that a bomb threat had been received by the Sulphur Police Department involving both the main campus of Sulphur High School and the 9th Grade Campus.

As a result, both school campuses were evacuated. The district stated that law enforcement was handling the situation and asked the public to avoid the area while the response was underway.

No injuries were reported, and officials repeatedly noted that everyone on campus was safe.

Students Relocated To Alternate Dismissal Sites

Because the buildings could not be used during the investigation, students from each campus were moved to alternate locations for supervised dismissal:

  • Sulphur High School Main Campus students were taken to Frasch Elementary.
  • Sulphur High School 9th Grade Campus students were taken to Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church.

The Calcasieu Parish School Board said dismissal would occur from those evacuation sites rather than the regular campuses.

Dismissal Procedures For Main Campus Students

By 3 p.m., the school board reported that dismissal was underway for both campuses at their respective relocation sites.

For the Sulphur High School main campus at Frasch Elementary:

  • Student drivers were being escorted back to their vehicles and allowed to leave as directed.
  • Bus riders and car riders were dismissed from Frasch Elementary.
  • Car rider pickup was scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
  • Parents were instructed to enter from Huntington onto Church Street, then turn right onto Ruth Street to help manage traffic flow.

Parents and drivers were urged to expect delays and to remain patient as dismissal procedures were carried out.

Dismissal Procedures For 9th Grade Campus Students

For the 9th Grade Campus students at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church:

  • All 9th grade students were being released from the church site.
  • Bus riders were dismissed first.
  • Car riders were picked up under the east-side covered walkway at the church.

Officials again cautioned families to anticipate traffic congestion as students were reunited with parents and guardians.

Police: School Cleared, Perimeter Lifted

The Sulphur Police Department later announced that the school had been cleared and that the perimeter had been lifted, meaning law enforcement no longer considered the threat active at the campuses.

With that clearance in place, students were released from the evacuation sites according to the procedures set by the school board.

Community Impact And Ongoing Communication

The Calcasieu Parish School Board used timed updates to keep families informed as the situation developed, first notifying the public about the threat and evacuation around 1:40 p.m., then providing specific dismissal details at 3 p.m.

Officials also repeatedly asked the public to avoid the area, in part to allow emergency responders and school transportation to operate more efficiently and safely.

As of the information provided, no additional details about the source of the threat, potential suspects, or future disciplinary or criminal actions had been released. No further statements or quotes were included in the official updates.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
