Sulphur, Louisiana — The City of Sulphur is finalizing the construction of its new Animal Control building at 3410 Bayou D’Inde Road in Westlake, Louisiana, marking a significant milestone in the community’s ongoing efforts to provide safe and reliable animal welfare services.

The new facility replaces the original Animal Control offices, which suffered substantial damage during Hurricane Rita in 2005. In the aftermath of the hurricane, operations were relocated to a modular facility intended as a temporary solution. However, the challenges persisted. In 2020, Hurricane Laura delivered further extensive damage to the modular building, underscoring the need for a permanent and resilient structure.

City officials report that the new building has been designed to withstand severe weather events, a critical consideration for infrastructure in the Gulf Coast region. The facility incorporates reinforced materials and modern construction standards to ensure continuity of animal care services, even during environmental emergencies such as hurricanes or floods.

The Sulphur Animal Control team provides a range of services for the local community, including animal rescue, adoption, and enforcement of city ordinances related to pets and stray animals. The new location is expected to improve operational efficiency, provide safer conditions for staff and animals, and better accommodate the public seeking to adopt pets or report animal-related incidents.

Community members are encouraged to consider adopting from Sulphur Animal Control. The agency houses numerous dogs and cats seeking permanent homes. Potential adopters can inquire about available animals or schedule a visit by calling 337-527-4577.
