SULPHUR, La. — A 73-year-old Sulphur man is facing an attempted second-degree murder charge after an early-morning shooting and hours-long barricade incident on Christy Lane, according to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began around 2 a.m. on January 18, when deputies with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office (CPSO) responded to a call about a shooting on Christy Lane in Sulphur. When deputies arrived and attempted to contact the suspect, identified as Larry J. Hardy, 73, of Sulphur, he barricaded himself inside his residence.

The CPSO Anti-Crime & Tactical Team, known as the ACT Team, was called to the scene to assist. Deputies used several tactics aimed at getting Hardy to leave the home safely, authorities said. During the standoff, at one point Hardy allegedly fired shots at deputies.

Despite the gunfire, deputies continued efforts to bring the situation under control. With the assistance of CPSO K-9 Ozzy, deputies were eventually able to detain Hardy and take him into custody.

A preliminary investigation by CPSO detectives indicates the victim had been sitting in his car in the roadway when Hardy began shooting at him. The victim was transported to a local hospital with an apparent gunshot wound. He was treated and later released, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Hardy was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center. He is charged with attempted second-degree murder. CPSO officials say the investigation remains active and that additional charges are expected.

Detective Larry Cormier with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office is the lead investigator on the case.

No additional details, including a possible motive or the relationship between Hardy and the victim, were released. The Sheriff’s Office has not reported any other injuries related to the incident.

All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
