Sulphur, Louisiana — A 23-year-old Lake Charles man escaped from the Sulphur jail Monday night after climbing over a fence behind the facility, prompting a police search that continues Tuesday.

Hayden Adam Gillard, 23, of Lake Charles, scaled the fence at approximately 9:51 p.m. on Oct. 6, 2025, and fled the area, according to the Sulphur Police Department. Officers immediately established a perimeter around the jail but were unable to locate the escaped inmate.
Gillard had been held at the facility since his Oct. 1 arrest on charges of burglary, theft, and resisting an officer. He was awaiting further court proceedings when he made his escape.
The Sulphur Police Department has not released details about how Gillard was able to access the area behind the jail or what security measures were in place at the time of the escape. The department has not indicated whether additional charges will be filed in connection with the jailbreak.
Local law enforcement continues to search for Gillard, who remains at large as of the time this was published on Tuesday, October 7, at 5 pm. Police have not indicated whether they believe he poses a danger to the public or if he may have received assistance in his escape.
